What is Kidney Disease in dogs?

Kidney disease in dogs, or renal disease as it is sometimes called, is quite common in dogs but if you keep your pet's immune system in good working order, many health problems can be prevented before they begin.

Your dog's kidneys are very important organs. They filter the blood and remove all the unwanted waste products.

When the kidneys are not working properly, waste products build up in the body causing your dog to become very ill.

There are two sorts of kidney disease, acute renal disease and chronic renal disease.

If your dog has acute renal disease, symptoms will happen suddenly and are frequently a consequence of toxicity, infections and other changes in the body that curtail the blood supply to the kidneys. Acute renal disease is sudden and serious.

Chronic renal disease occurs gradually and over a longer period of time and there may not be any evident signs of sickness, but If left untreated, kidney failure can occur and result in severe health complications for your dog.

Common Symptoms and Signs of Kidney Disease include:

An increase in water intake
A change in the way your dog urinates
Blood in the urine
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Stooping stance accompanied with a disinclination to walk
Poor skin and hair condition

Causes of Kidney Disease in Dogs

Toxic reaction to certain medications
Congenital diseases
Fungal, viral, and bacterial infections
Autoimmune diseases
Inherited disorders
Amyloidosis. This is a disorder in which abnormal proteins can build up in the kidneys

Diagnosing Kidney Disease in Dogs

If your vet diagnoses dog kidney disease, he or she will base their findings on the symptoms, physical examination and review of your dog's medical record.

To dtermine the cause, your vet may decide to undertake some diagnostic testing on your dog such as blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays and ultrasound tests.

Help for Dog Kidney Disease

Your vet may prescribe various medications to reduce the workload on the kidneys, and advise on dietary changes such as a low protein, sodium and phosphorus diet. Drinking plenty of fresh, clean water is always another recommendation.

In more severe cases, your dog may have to be hospitalized, where intravenous fluids, medications and nutritionary help will be administered.

Kidney dialysis and kidney transplants as a last resort may also be considered on dogs, but these treatments are extremely pricey.

Natural Remedies for Kidney Disease in Dogs

Natural remedies have also demonstrated to be highly effective in improving kidney operation and providing support to the urinary system in dogs.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies are gentle enough to use without any unkind side effects while also providing overall health and wellbeing.

Herbs for Kidney Disease

Arctium lappa (Burdock),

Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion)

Galium aperine (Cleavers)
