All Natural Ways to Keep Your Dog Clean

More and more, people are voicing their concerns about the use of chemicals in our homes, our clothing, and in our food. The presence preservatives, artificial color, and flavor enhancements in our food have become suspects as possible causes of a variety of illnesses including mood problems and allergies. In response to the public's changing attitudes, organic and natural products are popping everywhere. The trend away from using chemically based products and processed foods has also influenced pet supplies.

Keep Spot Naturally Clean

If asked, dogs will most likely tell you that bath time is not their most favorite activity. Stinky chemical-laden shampoos, rinses, and conditioners are no fun for humans so you can imagine what they smell like to a creature with a much more sensitive nose. There are a number of commercial toxin-free grooming products available as an alternative. These products use natural ingredients including citrus and jojoba oils, and aloe to clean, deodorize, and condition your dog's skin and coat without irritation. To help with dry skin or hot spots, many people find that rinsing their dog after shampooing with a solution of 1:1 apple cider vinegar (ACV) and water. ACV will also deodorize and soften your pet's fur.

To Flea or Not to Flea

Flea and tick infestation is constant bother to both pet and owner. Skin problems, ear infections, worms, and other maladies are directly related to fleas and ticks and controlling them is important to your pet's health. Topical insecticides that are applied to the back of the animal's neck each month have been a very popular solution; however, the EPA is now urging caution when using these products due to neurological damage and in extreme cases, death. Luckily, there are less toxic and less costly remedies for flea control. Using a fine-toothed flea comb regularly is one of the most effective ways of controlling infestation. If you all ready use an organic dog shampoo, check the label for lavender or citronella as an ingredient. If it isn't there you can add a couple of droppers full of these essential oils to the bottle. When you bathe your pet, make sure to leave the lather on for a full 3-5 minutes in order to get the best flea killing results.

Dental Care Is Not Just For Humans

While the idea of brushing puppy's teeth is not for everyone, it is a very good habit to get into. Dental problems affect animals as strongly as they do humans. In addition to infection or tooth loss, painful teeth or gums can impact your pet's nutrition and therefore it's ability to fend off insects or parasites. Herbs are an effective and natural way to reduce plaque and bacteria and improve doggie breath. Gels, sprays and pastes containing a combination of grape seed extract, peppermint and neem oils, and active enzymes are effective in promoting good dental health and do not require using a toothbrush.

A quick search of the internet reveals that there are many all natural ways to keep your dog clean and healthy. If you would like to reduce the number of chemicals your dog is exposed to but have concerns about the effectiveness of a holistic approach, talk to your veterinarian or visit one of the many websites dedicated to all natural dog care.
