Housebreaking a Puppy

One of the first things you need to do when you acquire a dog, is learn about housebreaking a puppy.

Housebreaking a puppy usually starts at between six and eight weeks old. Before this age dogs have very little control over thier muscles.

Patience and perserverence are the crucial elements here. Training a puppy to eliminate outside can take a month or more.

When first training your pup, keep watch for signs he is about to eliminate, such as cowering or circling, pick him up quickly, take him outside and firmly say "outside" or some other command that he can learn to recognise with the act. Then praise him when he has finished and he will soon get to realise that he will be praised and fussed over when he has eliminated in the correct place.

You won't always be able to catch him initially, so don't lose patience. It will take time for him to learn and be able to control his muscles properly.

Young pups need to go every 2 to 3 hours, so take him outside on a regular basis and give the command you Want him to learn. When he does eliminate issue the command once again so he begins to relate it with his actions, then bit by bit he will get used to the idea of eliminating outside. Don't forget to praise him when he's finished.

Dogs have an incredible ability to quickly learn what their alpha dog requires. That's what you must be, the leader of the pack. This is almost always achieved by connecting a verbal command with behavior, followed by praise. Punishment is usually counter-productive. Never rub a dog's nose in waste, they will have absolutely no idea why you are doing it.

Paper or crate training is preferred by some when housebreaking a puppy. A pup can be trained to go on a newspaper, or on one of the chemically treated pads designed for the purpose. Some small breeds that live all day in the home may not need to go outside at all, although clearly the most hygenic and healthy way of housebreaking your puppy is to teach him to go outside when he needs to eliminate.

Dogs that are paper trained will often prefer to eliminate indoors, and the habit will become difficult to break. Sometimes, if their aim is bad they'll miss the paper, then the exercise becomes counter productive as the carpet begins to smell and the dog recognises it as his own personal toilet. Much easier to put up with a few accidents at first and train your pup to go outside from the start.

Housebreaking a puppy is the first test to see if you and your dog can work together. Once this is accomplished you can both go on to more complex dog training confidently.
