Is Travelling With Your Dog a Good Idea? Most people are very attached to their dogs and can't bear the thought of leaving them behind when they go on a trip. Dogs in their natural state are roaming animals and enjoy exploring new territories and places and most dogs enjoy traveling with their owners. With the exception of dogs that get carsick, the majority of dogs love jumping into a car to go on a new adventure with their owner. There are a few things to take into consideration however, and you may actually find that taking your dog with you sometimes isn't such a good idea after all. One of the reasons most people want to take their dogs with them when they travel is because the dog may not handle separation properly. Dogs that haven't been properly trained or socialized may suffer from separation anxiety and these dogs don't do well in a kennel or boarding environment. Training your dog at an early age can greatly reduce the chances of him developing separation anxiety and help him enjoy his time at reputable dog care facilities and kennels. Taking your dog with you when you travel can not only stress you, it can also cause your dog stress. Most hotels require that you leave your dog in a crate when you are out of the room. You may find yourself leaving your dog alone in an unfamiliar place and this could cause unduly stress to your pet. If you're on a sightseeing vacation you will be unable to take your dog with you everywhere and he may end up having to sit in a crate all day while you're out dining or sightseeing. You will also worry and stress about leaving the dog in a strange place too. Both of you will become stressed and it won't be fun for either of you. If you are going to a friend or family member you should be sensitive to the fact that the person may not actually like having a dog in their home and may be tolerating your dog in order not to upset you. If there are people in the household you're visiting who have pet allergies it is unfair to cause them to get sick by taking your dog with you. Just as there are disadvantages to taking your dog with you on travels, there are also advantages. Dogs enjoy being with their owners and taking your dog with you when you're travelling will save you from worrying about what is happening to him while you're away from home. With proper planning you should be able to go on a pleasurable and stress free trip with your dog. Many hotels cater to dog owners and can provide a dog friendly environment for your dog. Some even provide dog sitters or a doggie day care center you can leave your dog in while you're out sightseeing or dining. If you intend to travel a lot with your dog you should make sure that he is well trained and socialized as well as keeping his vaccinations up to date. Some hotels and day care centers require proof of valid vaccination before they will allow your dog access. Camping trips are a great way to vacation with your dog as he will greatly appreciate the outdoors and freedom of a camping site, however with proper planning and research you can safely travel virtually anywhere with your pet and provide him with a great time too!
